This week, artists, character designers and animators will be gathering in Berlin for this year’s Pictoplasma Festival. Going from April 10 – 14, the event will feature concurrent exhibitions at over 20 art spaces throughout Berlin, conferences, film screenings and parties. Highlights from the festival include Jeff Soto’s (Hi-Fructose Vol. 16 cover artist) show at Platoon Kunsthalle Berlin and Low Bros’ (featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 26) show at Letters Are My Friends. Among the many talented emerging artists participating in the festival, newcomer El Grand Chamaco at Mercado San Cosme and Bakea at Instituto Cervantes caught our attention. Take a look at our preview of the exhibitions going on during Pictoplasma below and check out the festival’s website for a detailed schedule of the events.

Known for his hyper-realistic — or hyper-unrealistic, whichever you prefer — paintings of monsters, Travis Louie (Hi-Fructose Vol. 5) invents family histories and lineages by twisting our notions of photography as a form of documentation. The artist developed a meticulous painting technique that involves layering transparent acrylic paint over a graphite drawing, creating results with the same dimensionality and sepia-toned palette as antique photographs from the Victorian era.

Louie has a solo show coming up at Seattle’s Roq La Rue on April 12 titled “Monsters on Their Day Off.” For this particular series, Louie found inspiration in a collection of photographs of “human oddities” that depict sideshow performers going about their mundane activities. Louie’s new paintings reinterpret this theme, taking us into the daily lives of monsters and giving us insight into the quirks and behaviors we don’t see when they’re not lurking under our beds and the like. Each painting is accompanied by a short story written by the artist himself, demonstrating the full scope of his carefully-thought-out vision. Take a look at our preview of the works in the show below and check out “Monsters on Their Day Off” April 12 – May 4.

The sculptures of Israeli ceramicist Ronit Baranga flirt with the boundary between desire and repulsion. Baranga sculpts delicate lips and sensual fingertips, planting these tools of seduction in places where we least expect to find them. Plates and bowls grow mouths ready to lick and kiss. Caressing hands multiply until they turn into mutant, plant-like growths. These sensual features begin to seem invasive and frightening when stripped of their humanity and presented as inanimate objects. Take a look at some of Ronit Baranga’s sculptures below, images courtesy of the artist.

At a first glance, Ron Mueck’s work space looks more like a laboratory than an artist’s studio. The hyper-realist sculptor has perfected the art of replicating human flesh, building human faces and bodies both in large and small scale, all the while staying true to anatomical proportions. Mueck is opening a solo show on April 16 at Fondation Cartier in Paris — his first major European solo show since 2005. Take a look at some images of Mueck in his London studio from photographer Gautier Deblonde‘s recent visit with the artist, as well as some of the pieces in the show. Ron Mueck’s work will be on view at Fondation Cartier April 16 – September 29.

Based in South Africa, street artist and painter DALeast is an artist to watch. Following his solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery last November, DAL has created new canvases as well as fresh murals. The artist works with highly stylized forms, expressing the power of nature with depictions of wild beasts constructed from ribbon-like lines that appear to pulsate with force and energy. Take a look at a time lapse video below of DAL painting a multi-story building in Cape Town below and check out his recent work here on Hi-Fructose.
